Kavala International Airport "Megas Alexandros" (KVA), named after Alexander the Great, is the airport for Kavala and the island of Thassos, in northeast Greece. It sits near Chrysoupoli, in the Nestos valley, east of Kavala, and opened on this site in 1981. In 2025 it handled about 320,000 passengers, most of them on international flights.
Aegean Airlines flies to Athens, and in summer Condor, Eurowings, Jet2, TUI, Smartwings, Austrian Airlines, Air Serbia and others bring visitors from Germany, the UK, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Serbia and Romania. Germany is by far the biggest market.
All flights use one terminal, and Fraport Greece runs the airport. The single runway is 3,000 m long.
From the airport, most visitors head to Kavala city and its old town, to the coast at Keramoti for the ferry to Thassos, or along the coast to the beaches west of Kavala.

Arrival tips for Kavala Alexander the Great International Airport
All flights arrive at the single terminal. Flights from Athens and other Schengen countries arrive without passport checks; if you come from outside the Schengen area, for example from the UK or Serbia, you go through passport control, where non-EU visitors are registered in the EU's Entry/Exit System.
The terminal is small, so arrival is usually quick. Outside, taxis, car rental and pre-booked cars are the main ways to leave the airport. Kavala city is a drive west of the airport.
If you are going to Thassos, the ferry leaves from Keramoti, on the coast south of the airport, which is much closer than Kavala. Allow time for the crossing and check the ferry timetable before you land.
Greece is on Eastern European Time (EET), two hours ahead of the UK, and uses the euro.
