Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) serves Austin and Central Texas. It sits about 5 miles (8 km) southeast of downtown Austin, on the site of a former Air Force base, and opened in 1999, replacing the old Mueller airport.
Southwest is the largest airline, with about 41% of passengers, and Delta has a focus city here; American, United and Alaska also fly to many US cities. International routes include London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Cancún and Mexico City. The airport handled about 21.7 million passengers in 2025.
All flights now use the Barbara Jordan Terminal, which has 34 gates, six of them for international flights; the small South Terminal closed in March 2026. A major expansion, Journey With AUS, will add a new arrivals and departures hall and a second concourse, and a light rail line to the airport is planned.
From the airport, travelers head downtown, to the University of Texas, the Hill Country and Round Rock, and to big events such as SXSW and Austin City Limits.
