About Thessaloniki Macedonia International Airport

Thessaloniki Airport "Makedonia" (SKG) is the main airport for Thessaloniki and northern Greece, and the country's second-busiest airport. It sits in Thermi, by the Thermaic Gulf, about 13 km (8 miles) southeast of Thessaloniki city center. In 2025 it handled about 8 million passengers.

Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air and Sky Express fly to Athens, Crete, the islands and many European cities, and Ryanair has a base here. Wizz Air, easyJet and many other airlines add routes, especially to Germany, the UK, Cyprus, Italy, Poland and Austria, the biggest markets after Greece itself.

The airport has two terminals in one complex: Terminal 1, on three floors with gates 13–24, and Terminal 2, opened in 2021 with gates 01–12. Fraport Greece runs the airport.

From the airport, most travelers head into Thessaloniki's center and waterfront, southeast along the A25 motorway to the beaches of Halkidiki, or on to Mount Olympus, Kavala and the rest of northern Greece.

Arrival tips for Thessaloniki Macedonia International Airport

Flights from Athens and other Schengen countries arrive without passport checks. If you come from outside the Schengen area, for example from the UK, Israel or Turkey, you queue at passport control, where non-EU visitors are registered in the EU's Entry/Exit System.

After baggage claim, follow the signs out of the arrivals hall. OASTH bus 01X (01N at night) runs 24 hours a day into the city and on to the KTEL intercity bus station. Bus 02X links the airport with Nea Elvetia station on Metro Line 1, and a shuttle runs to the Mikra terminus of Metro Line 2. Taxis run 24 hours from the rank outside, and car rental desks are in the terminal. Pre-booked drivers usually meet you in the arrivals hall.

If you are heading to Halkidiki, the drive along the A25 motorway is much longer than the trip into the city, so check your hotel's distance.

Greece is on Eastern European Time (EET), two hours ahead of the UK, and uses the euro.
