Airport Transportation in Liberia
Pre-booked private transportation takes you directly from Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport to your hotel, resort or vacation rental.
After immigration, baggage claim and customs, continue outside the terminal to the meeting area named in your confirmation. Your vehicle is reserved only for the passengers on your reservation: unlike a shared shuttle, it makes no extra hotel stops for other travelers, and the price is per vehicle, not per person.
Airport transportation in Liberia covers the Guanacaste coast: the Gulf of Papagayo resorts, Playas del Coco, Playa Flamingo, Tamarindo and Nosara, as well as hotels in Liberia town and lodges near Rincón de la Vieja National Park.
Liberia Airport Transfers
Your Liberia airport transfer starts just outside the terminal doors after customs, where your driver waits with a sign showing your name, in company uniform and carrying official credentials. We track your flight, and the price is fixed per vehicle before you fly.
Choose anything from a sedan for two to a van for a family or group, and ride door to door to your resort, beach hotel, villa or vacation rental. Liberia airport transfers run both ways, so your ride back to LIR can go on the same booking.
Liberia Airport Shuttle
Our Liberia airport shuttle is a private van for your party only: it leaves as soon as you are through customs instead of waiting to fill seats, and it makes no stops at other hotels. There is room for suitcases plus surfboards, golf bags or fishing gear when you tell us at booking, which suits surf trips to Tamarindo and Nosara, families heading to the Papagayo resorts and groups sharing a villa.
Landing at Liberia Airport
Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) sits about 11 km (7 miles) west-southwest of downtown Liberia, the capital of Guanacaste province in northwestern Costa Rica. Since 2021 it has also been branded Guanacaste Airport, and most travelers call it Liberia Airport.
Everything happens in one terminal, opened in 2012, which handles both international and domestic flights. After leaving the plane you clear Costa Rican immigration, collect your bags in the baggage claim right after passport control, then pass customs; a duty-free shop sits on the arrivals side before the exit. Outside the doors, authorized operators in company uniforms wait with name signs.
Costa Rica runs on Central Standard Time (UTC-6) all year, with no daylight saving time.
Passport and onward ticket
You need a valid passport, and immigration officers may ask for a return or onward ticket and, in some cases, proof of funds. Visa rules depend on your nationality, so check them for your passport before you fly.
No online entry form
Costa Rica's official tourism site lists no separate online entry form for visitors arriving at Liberia.
Authorized transport only
The airport asks travelers to use only operators showing official credentials, uniforms and registered vehicles, so turn down anyone offering rides inside the terminal.
Colones and dollars
The currency is the Costa Rican colón, and US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. ATMs at the airport are generally a better choice than the currency exchange.

How Liberia Airport pickup works
- 1
Clear arrivals
Immigration, baggage claim, then customs. Representatives can't enter those areas.
- 2
Meet your representative
At the meeting point in your confirmation. Check the company name before getting in.
- 3
Go straight there
No other stops, no other passengers.
Meet outside the terminal
Pre-booked drivers wait just outside the terminal doors after customs, holding a sign with the passenger's name. Authorized operators wear company uniforms and carry official credentials.
Don't accept a ride from someone claiming to know your booking. Check the company name and reservation details before getting in.
Return trips and flight changes
Going back to the airport
Transportation can also be booked from your hotel, resort or vacation rental to Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport. Your pickup time covers the drive plus check-in, security and border procedures, and your airline's instructions come first. Give the correct departure time and terminal when you book.
If your flight changes
We monitor the arrival of the flight on your reservation, but can't find you on a different one. If any of these change, update them in Manage your booking:

Where will my driver meet me at Liberia Airport?
Your driver waits just outside the terminal doors after customs, holding a sign with your name. Authorized operators wear company uniforms and carry official credentials, so check both before getting in. LIR has a single terminal, so there is only one exit to look for.
Is Liberia Airport the same as Guanacaste Airport?
Yes. Guanacaste Airport is the brand name adopted in 2021 for Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, Costa Rica. It is not San José's airport, and it has nothing to do with the country of Liberia in West Africa.
How far is Liberia Airport from the Papagayo resorts?
The resorts on the Gulf of Papagayo are about 30 to 45 minutes from Liberia Airport by road. We take you straight to your resort's lobby, with no other hotel stops on the way.
Can you take me from Liberia Airport to Tamarindo?
Yes. Tamarindo is roughly 45 minutes to an hour from the airport by road, and we drop you at your hotel, condo or rental in town. Let us know about surfboards when you book so the right vehicle is assigned.
Can you take me to Playas del Coco or Playa Flamingo?
Yes. Playas del Coco lies in the same direction as the Papagayo resorts, and Playa Flamingo is further along the Guanacaste coast. Give us your exact address and we drive you door to door.
Do you drive to Nosara from Liberia Airport?
Yes. We take you by road to your hotel, villa or surf camp in Nosara. Give the full address or the property's name when you book, since many places there are off the main road.
Can you take me to lodges near Rincón de la Vieja National Park?
Yes. Rincón de la Vieja is a common next stop from LIR, and we drive you directly to your lodge or hotel near the park.
Do you serve villas and vacation rentals in Guanacaste?
Yes. Besides resorts and hotels, we drive to private villas, condos and vacation rentals. Add the full address and any gate or access details to your booking so the driver can reach the door.
Should I buy transportation from people inside the terminal at Liberia Airport?
The airport asks travelers to use only authorized operators, recognizable by official credentials, uniforms and registered vehicles. Booking before you fly means your driver is already waiting outside and the price is fixed.
What happens if my flight to Liberia is delayed or canceled?
We monitor the flight on your reservation and adjust the pickup to its actual arrival. If you change flights, miss a connection or your flight is canceled, update it in Manage your booking so we can rebook your pickup.
Can I book a ride back to Liberia Airport?
Yes. Book a one-way departure or add the return to a round-trip reservation, giving your departure time. Everything at LIR runs from one terminal, so the drop-off is the same for every airline.
Can I bring surfboards or golf clubs?
Yes. Many travelers to Guanacaste bring surfboards, golf bags or fishing gear. Tell us what you are carrying when you book so we assign a vehicle with enough room.
What time zone is Liberia, Costa Rica in?
Costa Rica uses Central Standard Time (UTC-6) all year and does not change clocks for daylight saving time. Give pickup times for your return ride in local time.
Is Airport Transportation the same as Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport?
No. Airport Transportation is a private transfer service that takes travelers between the airport and their hotel or rental; we do not run the airport. For terminal, airline and arrival details, see our Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport page.

Do drivers speak English?
Yes. While their English may not be native-level, drivers have the skills to communicate with passengers.
Are tips mandatory?
Tips are not mandatory but are highly recommended; drivers earn them through service quality.
What currencies are accepted?
All prices are in USD. If your card is in another currency, your bank converts the charge at its own exchange rate.

We can transport domestic pets kept in cages that fit in a normal vehicle.
Is there room for luggage?
Yes. There is plenty of room for one suitcase and one carry-on per person.
What is included in the price?
