Cyril E. King Airport (STT) is the airport for St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands, and the usual gateway for travelers bound for St. John as well. It stands on Lindbergh Bay on the island's south shore, about 2 miles (3 km) west of downtown Charlotte Amalie, and is run by the Virgin Islands Port Authority.
Most flights come from the US mainland. American Airlines flies to Miami, Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia and New York JFK, Delta to Atlanta, United to Newark, Houston and Washington Dulles, and Southwest, JetBlue, Sun Country and Breeze add more routes. Commuter airlines such as Cape Air, VI Airlink and Tradewind Aviation link St. Thomas with St. Croix, San Juan, Tortola, St. Barths and other nearby islands. The airport handled about 1.6 million passengers in 2025.
All flights use one two-story terminal with 11 gates, with mainland and Puerto Rico flights on the main side and smaller departure lounges for St. Croix and international commuter flights.
From the airport, most travelers head to Charlotte Amalie and Frenchtown, the cruise piers at Havensight and Crown Bay, the resorts of the East End, or the Red Hook ferry dock for St. John.

Arrival tips for Cyril E. King Airport
Flights from the US mainland and Puerto Rico are domestic, so there is no passport control when you land: you walk straight to the domestic baggage claim. If you arrive from another country, such as the British Virgin Islands, St. Barths, St. Maarten or the Dominican Republic, you first clear US Customs and Border Protection, with a passport and, depending on your nationality, an ESTA or US visa.
The terminal is small, so the walk from the gate to baggage claim is short. The baggage claim area has a bar and a liquor store, and car rental desks and taxi dispatchers are close by.
Outside the terminal, licensed taxis, most of them vans that carry several parties, wait for arriving flights; official taxis have a dome light and "TP" on the license plate. Pre-booked drivers usually meet passengers as they leave baggage claim.
The terminal is open from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and through December 31, 2026, the runway closes nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for pavement work. St. Thomas is on Atlantic Standard Time all year, uses the US dollar, and drives on the left.

Frequently asked questions
How far is St. Thomas airport from Charlotte Amalie?
Cyril E. King Airport is on Lindbergh Bay, about 2 miles (3 km) west of downtown Charlotte Amalie, so the drive usually takes around 10 minutes. Taxis and pre-booked cars wait outside the terminal. The waterfront, Frenchtown and the Crown Bay cruise pier are all close to the airport, while the Havensight cruise pier is on the east side of the harbor.
Is St. Thomas airport the same as Cyril E. King Airport?
Yes. Cyril E. King Airport, code STT, is the only commercial airport on St. Thomas, so travelers call it St. Thomas airport or STT Airport. It was known as Harry S. Truman Airport until 1984, when it was renamed for Cyril E. King, a former governor of the US Virgin Islands. St. Croix has its own airport, Henry E. Rohlsen (STX).
How do I get from St. Thomas airport to St. John?
There is no airport on St. John, so you fly into St. Thomas and cross by boat. Most travelers take a taxi or pre-booked car to Red Hook on the East End, about 30 to 45 minutes from the airport, and catch the passenger ferry or car barge to Cruz Bay. Ferries also leave from Crown Bay, and a water taxi has a desk in baggage claim.
Do I need a passport to fly into St. Thomas?
US citizens flying from the US mainland or Puerto Rico do not need a passport, because the US Virgin Islands is a US territory: a REAL ID-compliant photo ID is enough. International visitors need a passport and, depending on nationality, an ESTA or a US visa. When you fly back to the mainland, you pass a US Customs check, so carry proof of citizenship.
Why is there a customs check when leaving St. Thomas?
The US Virgin Islands is outside the US customs territory, so flights to the mainland go through a US Customs and Border Protection check before security screening. Officers ask about citizenship and goods you are carrying, and some fresh fruit, plants and meat are restricted. Allow extra time: local guides suggest arriving about three hours before departure, more at busy times.
How many terminals does St. Thomas airport have?
Cyril E. King Airport has one two-story terminal with 11 gates. Flights to the US mainland and Puerto Rico use the main departure area, and smaller lounges, including commuter and inter-island gates 10 and 11, serve St. Croix and international flights. Every arriving passenger exits through the same baggage claim area, so there is no terminal to choose.
Which airlines fly to St. Thomas?
American Airlines flies the most passengers, with routes to Miami, Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia and New York JFK. Delta flies to Atlanta, United to Newark, Houston and Washington Dulles, and Southwest, JetBlue, Sun Country and Breeze add routes. Cape Air, VI Airlink, Tradewind Aviation and other commuter airlines link St. Thomas with St. Croix, San Juan, Tortola and St. Barths.
Are there taxis at St. Thomas airport?
Yes. Licensed taxis wait outside the terminal for arriving flights, and many are vans that carry passengers for several destinations. Rates are set by the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission, so confirm the fare before you ride. Official taxis have a dome light and "TP" on the license plate; unmarked cars are not licensed and may charge unapproved rates.
Do they drive on the left in St. Thomas?
Yes. Traffic in the US Virgin Islands keeps to the left side of the road, even though most cars are American, left-hand-drive models. Roads on St. Thomas are often narrow, steep and winding. Avis, Budget, Hertz and Enterprise rent cars at the airport, and many visitors who prefer not to drive use taxis or a pre-booked car instead.
Is St. Thomas airport open all night?
No. The terminal is open from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and airline counters, customs and security may close earlier. Through December 31, 2026, the runway also closes every night from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for pavement work, so late flights may be rescheduled. Check your airline's times before you travel.
Where can I park at St. Thomas airport?
The Virgin Islands Port Authority runs public parking at the airport, including a three-level garage named for Dale A. Gregory that opened in 2025. Parking is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and you pay the cashier on site. Most debit and credit cards are accepted, but not American Express or Discover.
What time zone is St. Thomas in?
St. Thomas is on Atlantic Standard Time (UTC-4) all year and does not use daylight saving time. In winter it is one hour ahead of New York; from March to November, when the mainland's East Coast moves its clocks forward, St. Thomas shows the same time as New York. The US Virgin Islands uses the US dollar.
What can I bring back from St. Thomas?
Travelers returning to the mainland have a larger duty-free allowance than from most destinations, including more alcohol when part of it is made in the US Virgin Islands. Fresh fruit, vegetables, plants and fresh meat may be restricted or confiscated at the customs check, while commercially packaged foods, sealed sauces, coffee and local seasonings are usually allowed. Declare anything you are unsure about.
