About Grantley Adams International Airport

Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) is the international airport of Barbados, serving Bridgetown and the whole island. It stands at Seawell in the parish of Christ Church, near the southern tip of the island, about 13 km (8 miles) southeast of Bridgetown, beside the ABC Highway (Highway 7).

Most visitors arrive from North America and the UK. American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue and United fly from US hubs, Air Canada and WestJet from Toronto, and British Airways and Virgin Atlantic from London, with TUI and other carriers adding winter flights from the UK and Germany. Caribbean Airlines, interCaribbean, LIAT 2020 and Winair link Barbados with the neighboring islands, and the airport handled about 2.4 million passengers in 2025.

Arrivals and departures use separate buildings side by side: a newer arrivals terminal with immigration, customs and five baggage carousels, and a departures terminal with the gates and shops.

From the airport, the south coast around Oistins and St. Lawrence Gap is close by, Bridgetown and its cruise port are to the west, and the west coast hotels and villas around Holetown and Speightstown are about 28 km (17 miles) or more to the northwest.

Arrival tips for Grantley Adams International Airport

Before you fly, complete the Barbados immigration and customs form online at travelform.gov.bb; it can be submitted up to 72 hours before travel, and the government asks for it at least 24 hours ahead. Visitors from the US, Canada, the UK and many other countries need no visa for a holiday, but you need a valid passport and an onward or return ticket.

After landing you walk into the Arrivals Terminal for immigration, then collect your bags from one of the five carousels and pass through customs, where anything prohibited or dutiable must be declared. A Bridgetown Duty Free branch sells liquor and perfume in the arrivals hall before customs.

Outside the arrivals hall you find the taxi stand, car rental representatives, tour company reps holding signs, and the bus stop in front of the terminal. Pre-booked drivers meet passengers as they come out.

Barbados is on Atlantic Standard Time (UTC-4) all year and drives on the left.

Taxi from Barbados airport

Taxis wait outside the arrivals hall. They have no meters and charge government-set fares for the whole car, so confirm the fare with the driver before you set off.

Public bus

Buses stop directly in front of the terminal, with routes to Oistins on the south coast and to Bridgetown, where you change for the west coast. Fares are flat and exact change is needed, which is hard with suitcases.

Car rental

Local rental firms meet customers at the airport. You need your home driving license plus a Barbados visitor's driving permit, which the rental company or the airport police desk can issue, and traffic keeps to the left.

Private transfer

A pre-booked car meets you as you leave the arrivals hall and goes straight to your hotel, villa or the cruise port, useful for families, groups and late arrivals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main airport in Barbados?

Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) is the only international airport in Barbados and handles every passenger flight to the island. It is often called Barbados Airport or Bridgetown Airport, and was known as Seawell Airport until 1976. It stands at Seawell in Christ Church, near the southern tip of the island, about 13 km (8 miles) southeast of Bridgetown.

How far is Barbados airport from Bridgetown?

Barbados airport is about 13 km (8 miles) southeast of Bridgetown along the ABC Highway (Highway 7). The south coast is closer: St. Lawrence Gap is about 8 km away and Oistins is a short drive west. The west coast hotels around Holetown are about 28 km (17 miles) away, and traffic around Bridgetown can slow the trip at busy times.

Do I need to fill in a form before flying to Barbados?

Yes. Every arriving passenger must complete the Barbados immigration and customs form online at travelform.gov.bb before arrival. It combines the immigration card and the customs declaration, can be submitted up to 72 hours before travel, and the government asks for it at least 24 hours ahead. Departing passengers do not need to fill in the arrival section.

Do I need a visa to visit Barbados?

Visitors from the US, Canada, the UK and many other countries do not need a visa for a holiday, and immigration officers set your permitted stay on arrival. You need a passport valid for your whole stay and an onward or return ticket. Visa rules depend on nationality, so check yours with the Barbados Immigration Department before booking.

How many terminals does Barbados airport have?

Grantley Adams has separate arrivals and departures buildings side by side, shared by every airline. All passengers land through the Arrivals Terminal, with immigration, customs and five baggage carousels, and leave through the Departures Terminal, with check-in, security and the gates. The former Concorde hangar is used as a departures terminal for sea-air cruise passengers.

Which airlines fly to Barbados?

American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue and United fly from US cities, Air Canada and WestJet from Toronto, and British Airways and Virgin Atlantic from London Heathrow. Where are the taxis at Barbados airport?

Taxis wait at the stand just outside the arrivals hall. Barbados taxis have no meters: fares are set by the government and charged for the whole car rather than per person, so confirm the fare with the driver before you leave. Taxis have license plates starting with the letter Z.

Is there a lounge at Barbados airport?

Yes. The Airline Executive Lounge is in the Departures Terminal past security, next to Gate 12, reached by stairs or elevator, and is open to eligible airline passengers. A second lounge run by Caribbean Aircraft Handling is on the mezzanine of the departures area before security. Check with your airline whether your ticket includes access.

Can I go straight from Barbados airport to a cruise ship?

Yes. Cruise ships dock at the Bridgetown Port cruise terminal on the west side of Bridgetown, reached from the airport by taxi or pre-booked car along the ABC Highway. Passengers on sea-air packages flying home from a cruise may be checked in at the former Concorde hangar, which reopened as a sea-air departures terminal in November 2024.
