About Salgado Filho International Airport

Salgado Filho International Airport (POA) is the main airport of Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. It is run by Fraport Brasil and handled about 7.5 million passengers in 2025.

Azul, GOL and LATAM Airlines fly to Brazilian cities such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Belo Horizonte and Recife, and Azul also links Porto Alegre with smaller towns across Rio Grande do Sul. International flights go to Buenos Aires with Aerolíneas Argentinas, GOL and LATAM, to Santiago and Lima with LATAM, to Panama City with Copa Airlines and to Lisbon with TAP Air Portugal.

All passenger flights use Terminal 1, which has domestic and international areas. The airport sits in the Anchieta district, roughly 9 km north of downtown Porto Alegre, a drive of about 15 to 20 minutes outside rush hour. Floods closed the airport in May 2024; domestic flights returned on October 21, 2024, and full operations on December 16, 2024.

From the airport, most travelers head to downtown Porto Alegre and the Moinhos de Vento district, or drive into the Serra Gaúcha to Gramado, Canela, Bento Gonçalves and Caxias do Sul.

Arrival tips for Salgado Filho International Airport

If you arrive on an international flight, you go through Federal Police passport control and then Receita Federal customs; US, Canadian and Australian citizens have needed a Brazil e-visa again since April 10, 2025, so have it approved before you fly.

Domestic and international bags come out on the carousels in Terminal 1. Keep your baggage tag, as staff may check it at the exit.

Once you leave the arrivals area, the official taxi stand, run by the Cootaero cooperative, and the pickup area for ride apps such as Uber and 99 are just outside on the arrivals level. Pre-booked drivers usually wait in the arrivals hall holding a name sign. Turn down anyone offering a ride inside the terminal and use only the official stand, an app or your booked driver.

Porto Alegre has four seasons, with cool, damp winters from June to August and hot summers. The city runs on Brasília time (UTC-3, no daylight saving time) and uses the Brazilian real (BRL).

Taxi from Porto Alegre airport

Cootaero cooperative taxis wait at the official stand outside arrivals, run 24 hours and take cards. The ride to downtown usually takes 15 to 20 minutes, longer at rush hour.

Rideshare

Uber and 99 pick up outside the arrivals area. Cars are plentiful, but surge pricing applies at busy times.

Private transfer

A pre-booked driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign. This is the simplest option for long trips to Gramado or Canela, roughly two hours by road.

Bus to Gramado and Canela

Citral runs intercity buses from the airport to the Serra Gaúcha, taking about 2.5 hours to Gramado. Departures are limited, so check the timetable before you fly.

Aeromóvel and Trensurb train

The Aeromóvel people mover that linked Terminal 1 with Trensurb's Aeroporto station has been out of service since the May 2024 floods. Reconstruction began in September 2026 and is expected to take about 12 months.

City bus

Municipal buses stop outside arrivals and reach the city, but routes often require transfers and are hard to use with large bags.

How far is Porto Alegre airport from the city center?

Salgado Filho International Airport is about 9 km from downtown Porto Alegre, in the Anchieta district on the north side of the city. The drive usually takes 15 to 20 minutes outside rush hour, and longer at weekday peak times when traffic builds toward downtown. Taxis and ride apps cover the trip around the clock.

Is Porto Alegre airport open after the 2024 floods?

Yes. Floods closed Salgado Filho airport on May 3, 2024, and flights moved temporarily to Canoas Air Force Base. Domestic flights returned to the airport on October 21, 2024, on a shortened runway, and full operations on the 3,200 m runway resumed on December 16, 2024. International flights, including Copa Airlines to Panama, followed that same month.

How many terminals does Porto Alegre airport have?

Porto Alegre airport has one passenger terminal, Terminal 1, which handles all domestic and international flights. Check-in, baggage claim, arrivals and departure gates are in the same building. The former Terminal 2 stopped handling flights in 2019 and now serves as Fraport Brasil's administration building, so you do not need to transfer between terminals.

Which airlines fly from Porto Alegre airport?

Azul, GOL and LATAM Airlines run most flights, connecting Porto Alegre with São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Curitiba, Florianópolis and other Brazilian cities. International service includes Aerolíneas Argentinas to Buenos Aires, LATAM to Santiago and Lima, Copa Airlines to Panama City and TAP Air Portugal to Lisbon. All of these airlines use Terminal 1.

Are there official taxis at Porto Alegre airport?

Yes. Taxis from the Cootaero cooperative wait at the official stand just outside the arrivals area in Terminal 1. They run 24 hours a day and accept credit cards. Use only this stand, a ride app or a driver you booked in advance, and decline offers from people approaching you inside the terminal.

Can I take the train from Porto Alegre airport?

Not easily at the moment. The Aeromóvel people mover that connected Terminal 1 with Trensurb's Aeroporto train station has been out of service since the May 2024 floods damaged its equipment. Reconstruction work started in September 2026 and is expected to take about 12 months, so plan on a taxi, ride app or bus for now.

Does Uber work at Porto Alegre airport?

Yes. Uber and the Brazilian app 99 both operate at Salgado Filho airport, with pickups outside the arrivals area of Terminal 1. Average Uber trips between the airport and the city take about 17 minutes over roughly 9 km. Surge pricing can apply when many flights land at once or during heavy rain.

It depends on your passport. US, Canadian and Australian citizens have needed a Brazil e-visa again since April 10, 2025, and airlines check for it before boarding. Many European and South American travelers can enter visa-free for tourism. Check the rules for your nationality with Brazil's consular services before you travel.
