About Tulum
Tulum is two hours south of Cancún Airport along Highway 307. Its ruins are one of the few walled Maya cities built on the coast, and today Tulum combines a small town, jungle neighborhoods and a long strip of beach hotels.
Areas of Tulum
Tulum Downtown (Tulum Pueblo). The town itself, along Highway 307, with local restaurants, bars, shops and the ADO bus station. It has no beach of its own, so most visitors reach the sand by bike or taxi.
Aldea Zama. A newer neighborhood between the town and the beach, close to the ruins, with apartments, boutique hotels and restaurants.
La Veleta. A quieter residential area next to downtown, with villas and condos for longer stays. The beach is about a 10-minute drive away.
Beach hotel zone. The coastal road south of the ruins, lined with beachfront hotels, beach clubs and restaurants. It is the most expensive part of Tulum and the farthest from the airport.
Beaches
Playa Paraíso sits just south of the archaeological site, with white sand and the ruins on the cliff at one end. The beaches continue south along the hotel zone, and Soliman Bay, north of town, is a calmer, less crowded bay.
Ruins and nature
The Tulum archaeological site is a walled Maya port overlooking the sea, with El Castillo on the edge of the cliff. Inland, the Cobá ruins are about an hour's drive away, and the cenotes along the road to Cobá, such as Gran Cenote, are popular for swimming and snorkeling. South of the hotel zone begins the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of lagoons, mangroves and reef.
