About Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport

Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport (GNB) is the airport for Grenoble and the ski resorts of the Isère Alps in southeastern France. It stands in the countryside at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, about 45 km (28 miles) by road northwest of Grenoble, reached from the A48 Lyon–Grenoble highway; the drive to the city usually takes 40 to 50 minutes.

Almost all flights are seasonal and most run in winter, when skiers arrive on weekend flights from the UK and Ireland. easyJet, Jet2.com, Ryanair, Wizz Air and British Airways fly from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Dublin, and Wizz Air, Transavia and Norwegian add routes from Warsaw, Vilnius, Belgrade, Rotterdam and Stockholm.

Passengers use one compact terminal, with arrivals on the ground floor and departures upstairs. From here most travelers head into Grenoble or up to the resorts: Chamrousse, Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes are the nearest big ski areas, and the Vercors plateau around Villard-de-Lans is close by. The Tarentaise resorts of Savoie, such as Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens, Tignes and Val d'Isère, are a longer drive.

Arrival tips for Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport

Most aircraft park on the apron, so you walk or take a short bus ride to the terminal. Flights from the UK, Ireland and other countries outside the Schengen area go through passport control, where non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES). Lines can build on winter Saturdays, when several flights land close together, so keep your passport and accommodation details at hand.

The baggage claim hall has three belts. Skis, snowboards and other oversized bags come out at a separate ski delivery point at the side of the hall, so check both before you walk through customs into the arrivals hall.

In the arrivals hall you find the car rental desks and the meeting area for pre-booked drivers and ski transfer companies. Taxis and coaches wait outside the terminal. Public transportation is limited, especially in the evening, so arrange your onward trip before you fly. France is on Central European Time and uses the euro; there is an ATM but no currency exchange desk.

Ground transportation

With few public buses, most visitors arrive with a pre-booked transfer or ski coach, or rent a car.

Book a transfer from GNB

Private transfer

A pre-booked driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you door to door to Grenoble or your ski resort, the easiest option with ski bags or a family.

Ski transfer coaches

Shared ski coaches, such as Ben's Bus, run mainly on winter weekends to resorts in Isère and Savoie. Seats must be booked ahead, and coaches stop at several resorts on the way.

Airport bus to Grenoble

In winter a seasonal bus has linked the airport with Grenoble's bus and train stations in about 45 to 50 minutes; from there, Transaltitude buses go up to the Isère resorts. Check the current timetable before you fly.

Taxi from Grenoble airport

Taxis wait outside the arrivals building, but there are few of them for the number of passengers on busy days, and longer trips to the resorts are best booked ahead.

Car rental

Avis, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt have desks in arrivals, all open in winter. Mountain roads in France require winter tires or carried snow chains in the cold season.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Grenoble airport from Grenoble city center?

Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport is about 45 km (28 miles) by road northwest of Grenoble, at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs. The drive takes about 40 to 50 minutes via the A48 highway, longer in heavy traffic or snow. In winter, a seasonal airport bus has linked the terminal with Grenoble's bus and train stations, and taxis and pre-booked cars wait outside.

How do I get from Grenoble airport to the ski resorts?

Most skiers take a pre-booked private transfer or a shared ski coach, since public buses from the airport are limited. The nearest big resorts are Chamrousse, about 1 hour 20 minutes away, and Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes, about 1 hour 50 minutes. Alternatively, take the airport bus to Grenoble and a Transaltitude bus up to the Isère resorts.

How far is Grenoble airport from Alpe d'Huez?

Alpe d'Huez is about 107 km (66 miles) from Grenoble airport, a drive of around 1 hour 50 minutes in good conditions. The last stretch climbs the famous 21 hairpin bends above Bourg-d'Oisans, so snow and Saturday traffic can add time. Private transfers, ski coaches and rental cars all make the trip.

Can I fly to Grenoble airport for Val Thorens, Courchevel or Val d'Isère?

Yes, many skiers do. The Tarentaise resorts in Savoie are farther than the Isère resorts, at about 2 hours 40 minutes to Val Thorens and about 3 hours to Tignes and Val d'Isère in good conditions. Ski coaches and private transfers serve them on winter weekends, and journey times grow in snow or heavy Saturday traffic.

Which airlines fly to Grenoble airport?

easyJet, Jet2.com, Ryanair, Wizz Air and British Airways fly the most routes, mainly from UK airports such as London Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol. Ryanair flies from Dublin, Wizz Air from Warsaw, Vilnius and Belgrade, Transavia from Rotterdam, Norwegian from Stockholm and Aurigny from Guernsey. Nearly all routes are seasonal.

Is Grenoble airport open all year?

Grenoble airport is busiest in the winter ski season, from about December to April, when most of its flights operate, especially on Saturdays. Outside winter there are few scheduled passenger flights, and some services, such as car rental desks, run on reduced hours. Check your airline's schedule and the airport website for current flights.

How many terminals does Grenoble airport have?

Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport has one compact passenger terminal. Arrivals, baggage claim and the car rental desks are on the ground floor, and check-in, security and the departure lounges are on the first floor. Most aircraft park on the apron, so passengers walk or take a short bus ride between the plane and the terminal.

What do I need to enter France at Grenoble airport?

France is in the Schengen area, so flights from the UK, Ireland and other non-Schengen countries go through passport control. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation. Check the visa rules for your nationality before you fly.

Where do ski bags come out at Grenoble airport?

Skis, snowboards, poles and other oversized bags come out at a separate ski delivery point at the side of the baggage claim hall, not on the main belts. On busy winter Saturdays they can take longer to arrive, so check both the belt for your flight and the ski delivery point before you walk through customs.

Is there a bus from Grenoble airport to Grenoble?

In past winter seasons, a seasonal airport bus has run between the terminal and Grenoble's bus and train stations, taking about 45 to 50 minutes. The airport changed operator in July 2026, so check the current timetable on the airport website before you travel. From Grenoble station, Transaltitude buses continue to the Isère ski resorts.

Are there taxis at Grenoble airport?

Yes. Taxis wait outside the arrivals building, but there are not many of them for the number of passengers on busy winter Saturdays. Because the airport is in the countryside, far from both Grenoble and the resorts, many travelers book a car ahead rather than wait for a taxi.

Is Grenoble airport the same as Lyon airport?

No. Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport (GNB) is a separate airport at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, between Lyon and Grenoble. Lyon-Saint-Exupéry Airport (LYS) is about 40 minutes away by road, and Geneva Airport (GVA) is farther still. All three serve the French Alps, so check the code on your ticket.

Where can I park at Grenoble airport?

Parking is directly outside the terminal. P0, opposite the terminal doors, is for drop-offs and pickups, with the first 15 minutes free, and P1 is the main parking lot for longer stays. Reserved spaces for disabled drivers are available. Check the airport website for current rates before you travel.
