About Tokyo Haneda International Airport

Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), officially Tokyo International Airport, is the closer of Tokyo's two main airports to the city center. It sits on Tokyo Bay in Ōta ward, about 15 km (9 miles) south of Tokyo Station. In 2024 it handled about 86 million passengers, the third-highest total in the world.

Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways (ANA) both have their main domestic hubs here, with flights to almost every corner of Japan, from Sapporo to Okinawa. International flights reach Asia, North America, Europe, Australia and the Middle East, including Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Honolulu, Vancouver, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul, Sydney, Dubai and Doha.

The airport has three terminals. Terminal 1 handles domestic flights by Japan Airlines, Skymark and StarFlyer; Terminal 2 handles ANA, Air Do and Solaseed Air domestic flights and some ANA international flights; Terminal 3 is the main international terminal, open 24 hours. Terminals 1 and 2 are linked by an underground walkway, and a free shuttle bus connects all three.

From the airport, most travelers head into central Tokyo, to Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku and Ginza, or south to Yokohama and Kawasaki. The Tokyo Monorail and the Keikyu Line both run from the terminals into the city.

Arrival tips for Tokyo Haneda International Airport

International flights arrive at Terminal 3, or at the international area of Terminal 2 for some ANA flights. You go through quarantine, then immigration, where foreign visitors have their fingerprints and photo taken, and then customs. Filling in your details on Visit Japan Web before you fly can speed up immigration and customs.

After customs you come out into the arrivals lobby. Follow the signs for trains, buses or taxis. The Tokyo Monorail runs to Hamamatsuchō, and the Keikyu Line runs to Shinagawa and on into the city and toward Yokohama. Airport limousine buses go to major hotels and stations across the Tokyo area. Pre-booked drivers usually meet you in the arrivals lobby.

Most trains and buses stop around midnight, so for late-night arrivals a taxi or pre-booked car is the practical option.

Japan is on Japan Standard Time (UTC+9) all year and uses the yen. An IC card such as Suica or PASMO makes trains and buses easy.

Ground transportation

Trains are quick and cheap into Tokyo; a taxi or pre-booked car is easier with luggage, at night or for hotels away from the stations.
