About Cancún International Airport

Cancún International Airport (CUN) is the main gateway to Cancún, the Riviera Maya and the Mexican Caribbean in Quintana Roo, Mexico. It sits inside the Cancún urban area, less than 10 km southwest of the Hotel Zone, and it is the arrival airport for travelers staying in Costa Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Akumal and Tulum.

Flights link Cancún with more than 100 cities in the Americas and Europe. Viva Aerobus and Volaris run large domestic networks from here, with frequent flights to Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara. Most US and Canadian airlines fly in from their hubs, including American, Delta, United, Southwest, Air Canada and WestJet, and European carriers such as Air France, British Airways, Condor and Turkish Airlines add long-haul routes.

Passenger flights use three terminals. Terminal 2 handles domestic flights and most routes to Central and South America, Terminal 3 handles international flights from the United States, Canada and Europe, and Terminal 4 handles both. Terminal 1, for charter and private flights, is being rebuilt, and an FBO terminal serves executive aviation. The terminals are separate buildings linked by a free shuttle.

The Tren Maya's Cancún Airport station stands across Federal Highway 180, connected to the terminals by shuttle bus, for rail trips toward Tulum, Chichén Itzá and Mérida.

Arrival tips for Cancún International Airport

International passengers start at Mexican immigration. Follow the signs to passport control and have your passport ready, together with any documents your nationality requires. Eligible travelers with biometric passports may be sent to automated gates; follow the instructions shown on arrival.

Next, collect your bags at the carousel shown for your flight. Report missing or damaged luggage at your airline's baggage desk before you leave baggage claim: the airport's Lost and Found only handles items left inside the terminal.

Customs comes last. Make any declaration you need, then walk out into the public arrivals area. People inside the terminal may offer you transport; if you already have a booking, keep walking. Pre-booked transfers and hotel shuttles meet passengers outside, where each terminal has numbered shuttle platforms.

Terminals 2, 3 and 4 are separate buildings, so check which one you land at before you tell anyone where to meet you. ADO buses and the shuttle to the Tren Maya station also leave from outside the terminals.

Ground transportation

A pre-booked transfer suits most travelers going to a hotel or resort, because city taxis cannot pick up at the airport.

Book a transfer from CUN

Private transfer from Cancún airport

A driver meets you outside the terminal and drives straight to your hotel or rental in Cancún, Costa Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Akumal or Tulum. The most comfortable choice with luggage or a group, at a higher cost than the bus.

Authorized airport taxi

Only official airport taxis can pick up at the terminals; city taxis cannot. They wait outside arrivals and charge higher rates than most pre-booked rides.

ADO bus to Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum

ADO buses stop at all terminals and run direct to the ADO stations in Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Mérida, with no hotel stops. Tickets bought at Terminal 4 cost more than at the other terminals or online.

Shared shuttle

Shuttle companies serve hotels from numbered platforms outside each terminal, and most take bookings online in advance. Several hotels share one vehicle, so the ride takes longer.

Tren Maya from Cancún Airport station

The station is across Federal Highway 180, reached by a shuttle bus from the terminals. Trains run west toward Chichén Itzá and Mérida and south toward Tulum.

Rental cars

Car-rental desks operate at the airport, and parking is available at all terminals.

Moving between terminals

  1. 1

    Free inter-terminal shuttle

A free shuttle bus links the passenger terminals, with departures about every 10 minutes.

  2. 2

Allow time to check in again

Changing terminals usually means leaving the building, riding the shuttle, checking in again and going back through security, so leave extra time between flights. Walking between terminals with luggage is not recommended.

Accessibility and passenger assistance

Requesting assistance

Ask your airline for wheelchair service or other help when you book, or at least 48 hours before you fly. Assistance at the airport is arranged by the airline and its ground-handling company.

Reduced mobility

Passenger areas have accessible routes, lifts, ramps and adapted restrooms. If you travel with your own mobility equipment, confirm handling rules with the airline in advance.

Service animals

Confirm the documents and travel conditions for a service animal with your airline before you fly.

Assistance on arrival

If you requested assistance, tell the cabin crew before you leave the aircraft so airline staff can meet you.

Parking

Public parking is available near the passenger terminals, including parking directly in front of Terminal 3. Parking areas operate around the clock, but tariffs, payment methods and long-stay conditions can change. Check the posted rate board on entry, keep the parking ticket secure and allow time to walk or use terminal transport when departing from a different building.

Frequently asked questions

What is the airport code for Cancún airport?

Cancún International Airport uses the IATA code CUN and the ICAO code MMUN. CUN is the code on boarding passes, baggage tags and flight-search sites, while MMUN appears mainly in aviation charts and flight trackers. Cozumel and Tulum have airports of their own with different codes, so check the code on your ticket before planning how you will leave the airport.

How many terminals does Cancún airport have?

Cancún airport has four passenger terminals and an FBO terminal for private aviation. Terminal 2 handles domestic flights and most Latin American routes, Terminal 3 handles international flights from the US, Canada and Europe, and Terminal 4 handles both domestic and international flights. Terminal 1 is reserved for charter and private flights. The buildings are separate, so confirm yours on your boarding pass.

How do I get between terminals at Cancún airport?

A free shuttle bus links the passenger terminals at Cancún airport, with departures about every 10 minutes. The terminals are separate buildings and walking between them with luggage is not recommended. If you are connecting between flights in different terminals, allow extra time to collect bags, check in again and clear security in the second terminal.

How far is Cancún airport from the Hotel Zone?

Cancún airport is less than 10 km southwest of the Hotel Zone, inside the Cancún urban area. Travel time depends on traffic and on how far along the Hotel Zone your hotel sits. Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Akumal and Tulum lie farther south along the coast, so trips to the Riviera Maya take considerably longer than trips into Cancún.

Is there a bus from Cancún airport to Playa del Carmen or Tulum?

Yes. ADO buses stop at all Cancún airport terminals and run direct to the ADO bus stations in Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Mérida. They do not stop at hotels, so you need onward transport from the station. Tickets sold at Terminal 4 cost more than at the other terminals, and buying online can be cheaper.

Is there a Tren Maya station at Cancún airport?

Yes. Cancún Airport station on the Tren Maya stands across Federal Highway 180 from the airport, and a shuttle bus connects it with the terminals. From there, trains run west toward Chichén Itzá, Mérida and Campeche and south toward Tulum. Check the timetable before you fly, because services are less frequent than buses.

How early should I arrive at Cancún airport for my flight?

A common guideline is to arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight from Cancún. Allow more time during holidays and peak winter weeks, when check-in and security lines get long, and confirm your departure terminal first, because each terminal is a separate building. Your airline's own recommendation always comes first.

Where do I report lost luggage at Cancún airport?

Report missing or damaged checked baggage at your airline's baggage-service desk before you leave baggage claim. The airline is responsible for bags that did not arrive or were left on the aircraft. The airport's Lost and Found office handles only items lost inside the terminal buildings, so contact it only for things you misplaced after landing.
