Geneva International Airport (GVA) serves Geneva, Switzerland, and the surrounding French border region. It handled about 17.8 million passengers in 2025, with direct flights to 149 destinations.
easyJet carries the largest share of passengers, followed by SWISS. Most routes link Geneva with European cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid, Lisbon and Barcelona, while Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways fly to the Gulf, United Airlines and SWISS fly to the US, Air Canada flies to Montreal, and China Eastern and Air China fly to China.
Almost all flights use Terminal 1, which has a Swiss side and a French sector for flights to and from France and road access to France. A small Terminal 2 opens only on winter weekends for charter and seasonal ski flights.
The airport lies about 4 km northwest of the city center, in Meyrin and Le Grand-Saconnex, with its northern edge on the French border. A railway station beneath the terminal has trains to Genève-Cornavin in about 7 minutes. From Geneva, travelers continue to Lausanne, Montreux, Annecy, Évian-les-Bains and Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, and to ski resorts such as Verbier in the Swiss and French Alps.

Arrival tips for Geneva International Airport
Passengers arriving from outside the Schengen area go through passport control; flights from Schengen countries have no passport check. Travelers from outside the EU and EFTA are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which applies at Switzerland's Schengen external borders and has been fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation.
Screens in the baggage hall show your belt. Skis and snowboards usually arrive at the oversized baggage counters at either end of the hall, and a ticket machine for public transport is also in the baggage claim area. After customs (green or red channel), you enter the Swiss arrivals hall of Terminal 1, where pre-booked drivers wait with name signs. The official taxi rank is outside the Arrivals level, and the railway station is beneath the terminal. If you are heading to France, go up to the Check-in level and follow the France Sector signs.
Geneva uses Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer), and the currency is the Swiss franc (CHF). Winters are cold, with snow in the nearby mountains.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Geneva airport from the city center?
Geneva International Airport is about 4 km northwest of central Geneva. Trains from the station beneath the terminal reach Genève-Cornavin, the main station, in about 7 minutes, with up to seven departures an hour at peak times. Taxis and tpg city buses also link the airport with the center, and buses serve neighborhoods the train does not reach.
Is Geneva airport in Switzerland or France?
Geneva International Airport lies entirely in Switzerland, in the municipalities of Meyrin and Le Grand-Saconnex, but its northern edge follows the French border. It has a French sector for flights to and from France, and a customs road links that sector with Ferney-Voltaire in France. Passengers with a same-day flight ticket can move between the Swiss side and the French sector inside the terminal.
How many terminals does Geneva airport have?
Geneva airport has one main passenger terminal, Terminal 1, which handles almost all flights and includes Swiss and French sectors. A small Terminal 2 opens only on weekends during the winter season for selected charter and scheduled ski flights. Terminal 2 is about 300 m from Terminal 1 on foot, next to car park P51, and several tpg bus lines stop nearby at Tour-de-Contrôle.
Which airlines fly to Geneva airport?
easyJet is the largest airline at Geneva, carrying 46% of passengers in 2025, followed by SWISS, British Airways, Air France, Iberia and KLM. Long-haul and Gulf routes are flown by Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, United Airlines, Air Canada, Air China and China Eastern. Almost all of these airlines use Terminal 1, while Terminal 2 handles some winter charter flights.
How do I get a taxi at Geneva airport?
Official taxis wait at a designated, signposted rank outside the Arrivals level of Terminal 1. Taxis to the city center and nearby areas run on set fares, and other trips are charged at the regulated per-kilometre rate. Payment methods vary from car to car, so ask the driver whether cash or card is accepted before you set off. The French sector has its own taxi companies.
Is there a train from Geneva airport to the city?
Yes. Genève Aéroport station is directly beneath the terminal, about a five-minute walk from the Arrivals level. All trains stop at Genève-Cornavin, about 7 minutes away, and many continue to Lausanne, Montreux, Bern and other Swiss cities. Tickets are sold at a machine in the baggage claim area, at SBB machines in the station and in the SBB Mobile app.
Does Geneva airport still give a free public transport ticket?
No. Geneva airport stopped offering free public transport tickets to arriving passengers in the baggage hall at the start of 2022. You now buy a ticket at the machine in the baggage claim area, at SBB machines or in the app. If you stay in a Geneva hotel, hostel or campsite, ask for the Geneva Transport Card, which covers public transport in the city for your stay.
Can I use Uber at Geneva airport?
Yes. Ride-hailing services, called VTC in Geneva, operate at the airport, and Uber offers pickups there. Fares are set by each platform, and drivers must follow the airport's access rules. Pickups happen in designated zones that the app shows after you request a ride, and the meeting point may not be at the exit nearest your baggage hall.
What do I need to enter Switzerland at Geneva airport?
Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, so passengers arriving from outside Schengen pass through passport control, while flights from Schengen countries have no passport check. Travelers from outside the EU and EFTA are registered in the Entry/Exit System, with fingerprints and a facial image taken on a first entry. The planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation.
How do I get from Geneva airport to the ski resorts?
Many skiers travel from Geneva airport to resorts in the Swiss and French Alps by pre-booked transfer or rental car. By rail, Léman Express trains from Cornavin reach Saint-Gervais-les-Bains near Chamonix, and the seasonal Verbier Express runs to Verbier on weekends and public holidays. Skis and snowboards usually arrive at the oversized baggage counters in the baggage hall.
Can I get from Geneva airport to France?
Yes. If your flight came from France, you land in the French sector and can exit directly into France. From other flights, collect your bags, clear Swiss customs, go up to the Check-in level and follow the France Sector signs. Trains from Cornavin also run to Annecy, Lyon, Grenoble and Évian-les-Bains, and rental cars can be collected on the French side.
What time zone and currency does Geneva use?
Geneva uses Central European Time, UTC+1, and moves to summer time, UTC+2, from late March to late October. The currency is the Swiss franc (CHF), while the neighboring French areas served by the airport use the euro. Winters are cold, and snow is common in the nearby mountains, so ski season brings heavy weekend traffic to the airport.
How busy is Geneva airport?
Geneva airport handled about 17.8 million passengers in 2025, slightly more than in 2024, on 177,288 aircraft movements. It had direct flights to 149 destinations that year. The airport is run by Genève Aéroport, an autonomous public entity, and has a single 3,900 m runway, so winter weekends with ski charters are among the busiest times.
