About Munich Airport

Munich Airport (MUC), officially Flughafen München "Franz Josef Strauß", serves Munich and southern Bavaria in Germany. It handled about 43.4 million passengers in 2025, second in Germany after Frankfurt.

Lufthansa runs its second hub here, with flights across Germany and Europe and long-haul routes to North America, Asia and Africa. Partners such as United Airlines, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, Austrian Airlines and Swiss add more links, while Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Turkish Airlines, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines connect Munich with the Gulf, Istanbul and the United States. Condor, Discover Airlines, TUI fly and easyJet fly mostly to leisure and European city destinations. In 2025, 96 airlines served 232 destinations from Munich.

There are two terminals. Terminal 1 handles most airlines outside Star Alliance, and Terminal 2 handles Lufthansa Group airlines and their Star Alliance partners. The Munich Airport Center and the S-Bahn station sit between them.

The airport lies about 28.5 kilometers northeast of central Munich, near Freising, off the A92 motorway. From here travelers head into Munich, to Freising and Erding, to Landshut, Regensburg and Nuremberg by regional train, and to Innsbruck and the mountain resorts of the Alps.

Arrival tips for Munich Airport

After landing, follow the signs to passport control if you arrive from outside the Schengen Area. Germany is in the Schengen Area: if you hold a non-EU passport, the Entry/Exit System (EES), fully in place since April 2026, records your fingerprints and photo at passport control, and the ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation. Flights from other Schengen countries skip passport control.

Collect your bags in the baggage hall and pass through customs into the public arrivals area. Terminal 2 has a single public exit on Level 03, while Terminal 1 has separate exits in each module, A to E, so check which module your flight uses.

Outside, taxi ranks wait at the arrival areas of both terminals, and ride-hailing pickup points are signposted "Ride App Pick Up." Pre-booked drivers wait in the public arrivals area with a name sign. The S-Bahn station lies between the two terminals and is reached by following the green S signs. Use only marked taxis from the official ranks rather than accepting rides offered inside the terminal.

Munich runs on Central European Time and uses the euro. Winters are cold, with snow possible, and summers are warm.

Ground transportation

The S-Bahn suits most travelers heading into central Munich, while a taxi or private transfer is easier with heavy luggage or for destinations outside the city.

S-Bahn S1 and S8 to Munich

Lines S1 and S8 leave from the station between the terminals and reach Munich Hauptbahnhof in about 40 minutes, with a train roughly every 10 minutes combined. The S8 also runs through the night at lower frequency; trains can be crowded at peak times.

Taxi from Munich Airport

Taxi ranks are at the arrival and departure areas of Terminals 1 and 2. The ride to central Munich takes about 40 minutes and varies with traffic on the motorway.

Lufthansa Express Bus

The bus runs every 20 minutes between both terminals, Munich North (Schwabing) and Munich Central Station, taking about 45 minutes to the station. It is open to passengers of any airline.

Regional train (ÜFEX)

The Airport Express regional train runs from the station between the terminals to Freising, Moosburg, Landshut, Regensburg and Nuremberg, without a change in Munich.

Rideshare

Ride-hailing apps such as Uber have signposted "Ride App Pick Up" points at both terminals. You agree the pickup point in the app, and the walk from arrivals takes a few minutes.

Private transfer

Pre-booked drivers meet you in the public arrivals area of your terminal. This is practical for Alpine resorts, Innsbruck or other places that need a change of train.

How many terminals does Munich Airport have?

Munich Airport has two passenger terminals. Terminal 1 is divided into five modules, A to E, each with its own check-in and security. Terminal 2 has central check-in and security, plus a satellite building with gates K and L that is reached by an underground train. The Munich Airport Center and the S-Bahn station sit between the two terminals.

Which terminal does my airline use at Munich Airport?

Lufthansa, Lufthansa City Airlines, Eurowings, Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti and Star Alliance partners such as United, Air Canada, Swiss, Austrian and Singapore Airlines use Terminal 2. Terminal 1 serves most other airlines, including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Delta, American Airlines, British Airways, Condor, TUI fly, easyJet and Turkish Airlines.

Where are the taxis at Munich Airport?

Taxi ranks are located at the arrival and departure areas of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and a taxi service point is on Level 03 of Terminal 2. Take a taxi from the marked ranks only. The trip to central Munich takes about 40 minutes, longer during rush hour on the motorways.

How do I get from Munich Airport to the city by train?

Take S-Bahn line S1 or S8 from the Flughafen München station between the two terminals. Trains reach Munich Hauptbahnhof in about 40 minutes, and together the two lines run roughly every 10 minutes. The S8 runs through the night at reduced frequency. Follow the green S signs from arrivals to reach the platforms.

Is there a bus from Munich Airport to the city center?

Yes. The Lufthansa Express Bus runs every 20 minutes between both terminals and Munich Central Station, stopping at Munich North in Schwabing. The trip to Central Station takes about 45 minutes, and the bus is open to passengers of any airline. Regional MVV buses also link the airport with Freising and Erding.
