About Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) is the airport serving Kolkata and the wider Kolkata metropolitan region in West Bengal, India. IndiGo, Air India Express and Alliance Air have bases here, and IndiGo, Air India, Akasa Air and SpiceJet connect Kolkata with Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Guwahati, Bagdogra for Siliguri and Darjeeling, Port Blair and many other cities. International flights link Kolkata with Dhaka, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Kathmandu, Paro, Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi.

Passengers use one integrated building, Terminal 2, opened in 2013, with a domestic wing and an international wing. Arrivals from both wings come out on the ground level.

The airport stands in Dum Dum, in the north of the city, about 16 km from Dalhousie Square (BBD Bagh) and Howrah Station. Jai Hind metro station on the Yellow Line opened at the airport in August 2025, and VIP Road and Jessore Road lead into the city. By road, Salt Lake Sector V and New Town (Rajarhat) are closer than central Kolkata, where most travelers head for Park Street, Esplanade and Ballygunge.

From the airport, travelers also continue to Howrah Station for trains across eastern India, and further afield to the Sundarbans, Shantiniketan and the beach town of Digha.

Arrival tips for Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport

After you leave the aircraft, follow the Arrivals signs. On an international flight you reach immigration first; most foreign visitors need an Indian visa or e-Visa and must also have submitted the e-Arrival card online within 72 hours before landing. Domestic passengers go straight to baggage claim.

Collect your bags at the baggage belts, then pass through customs (green channel if you have nothing to declare, red channel if you do) into the arrivals hall on the ground level of Terminal 2. Currency exchange counters and ATMs are in the terminal.

Prepaid taxis pick up on the arrivals level between Gates 3 and 4, with the payment counter inside the hall, and radio taxis near the lower level of arrivals. App cabs such as Uber and Ola use a designated pickup area. Jai Hind metro station, on the Yellow Line, is next to the terminal. Use an official counter, an app or a pre-arranged pickup rather than accepting rides offered inside the hall.

Kolkata is on India Standard Time (UTC+5:30) all year, and the currency is the Indian rupee (INR).

Frequently asked questions

How far is Kolkata airport from the city center?

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is in Dum Dum, about 16 km northeast of Dalhousie Square (BBD Bagh) and Howrah Station. The drive to Park Street or Esplanade usually takes 40 to 60 minutes, and longer at weekday rush hours. Salt Lake Sector V is about 10 km away and New Town (Rajarhat) about 14 km, both closer to the airport than central Kolkata.

Is Dum Dum Airport the same as Kolkata airport?

Yes. Dum Dum Airport is the former name of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, and many people in Kolkata still call it that because the airport stands in Dum Dum. It took its current name in 1995. The code CCU comes from Calcutta, the city's name until 2001.

Why is Kolkata airport's code CCU?

The IATA code CCU comes from Calcutta, the English name of the city until it was officially changed to Kolkata in 2001. The code was kept after the change, so tickets, baggage tags and flight boards still show CCU. The ICAO code is VECC. Check that your ticket shows CCU if you are flying to Kolkata.

How many terminals does Kolkata airport have?

Kolkata airport has one passenger terminal in use, the integrated Terminal 2, which opened in 2013. Domestic and international flights use separate wings of the same building. Arriving passengers from both wings come out on the ground level, so you never need to change buildings to connect between a domestic and an international flight.

Which airlines fly to Kolkata airport?

IndiGo has a large network at Kolkata, with domestic routes across India and international flights to Bangkok, Singapore, Dhaka, Hanoi and other cities. Air India, Air India Express, Akasa Air, SpiceJet and Alliance Air also fly domestic routes. International airlines include Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, flydubai, Air Arabia, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Drukair and Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

Is there a metro from Kolkata airport?

Yes. Jai Hind metro station, on the Yellow Line, opened at the airport on 22 August 2025. The Yellow Line runs to Noapara, where you can change to the Blue Line toward Esplanade, Park Street and south Kolkata. The planned Orange Line will also end at Jai Hind, linking the airport with New Town and the eastern side of the city.

Where is the taxi stand at Kolkata airport?

Prepaid taxis pick up on the arrivals level between Gates 3 and 4, and you pay at the prepaid counter before you leave the building. Radio taxis pick up near the lower level of arrivals. App cabs such as Uber and Ola also serve the airport from a designated pickup area. Use an official counter or app rather than accepting rides offered inside the terminal.

Do I need a visa to fly into Kolkata?

Most foreign visitors need an Indian visa. Citizens of many countries can apply online for an e-Visa at least four days before arrival, and Kolkata is one of the airports where e-Visa holders can enter. Your passport should be valid for at least six months. Foreign nationals and OCI cardholders also fill in the e-Arrival card online within 72 hours before landing.

What is the e-Arrival card for India?

The e-Arrival card replaced the paper disembarkation card. Foreign nationals and OCI cardholders submit it online within 72 hours before arrival, through the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app or the official Indian visa website. It records your arrival details and is not a visa. Indian citizens do not need to fill it in.

Are there lounges at Kolkata airport?

Yes. Travel Club operates lounges in both wings of Terminal 2. The domestic lounge is on the mezzanine level after security, near Gate 5, and the international lounges are airside after immigration and security, one above the Bishwa Bangla shop and one near Gates 10 and 11. Entry is through eligible airline status, lounge memberships, eligible cards or a walk-up pass.

Is there parking at Kolkata airport?

Yes. Kolkata airport has a multi-level parking garage with two underground levels holding about 3,000 cars, plus about 2,000 outdoor spaces near Terminal 2.
