Arrival tips for Florence Airport, Peretola
If you arrive from outside the Schengen area, you go through passport control before baggage claim. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation. Flights from Schengen countries arrive without passport checks.
There are no jetbridges, so a bus takes you from the aircraft to the terminal. Baggage claim is small and can get busy when several flights land together. Car rental desks are in arrivals, with the rental cars kept off-site and reached by shuttle bus.
Outside, the T2 tram stop is on your left as you exit, and the official taxi rank is in front of the terminal. If you booked a driver, they usually wait in the arrivals hall with a name sign. Use only licensed white taxis from the rank.
Florence is hot in summer and mild but damp in winter. It runs on Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer), and Italy uses the euro.
Ground transportation
The T2 tram is the simplest way into central Florence for most travelers, while a taxi is easier with heavy bags or late at night.

Licensed white taxis wait at the rank in front of the terminal. The ride to the historic center takes about 15 minutes, although some streets in the center are closed to traffic.
Bus to Santa Maria Novella
An Autolinee Toscane bus links the airport with Florence's main railway station, Santa Maria Novella, about every 30 minutes. It is an alternative when the tram is crowded.
Private transfer
A pre-booked driver meets you in arrivals and takes you to your hotel in Florence or out to Chianti, Siena or the Tuscan countryside. It needs to be booked in advance.
Rental car
Rental desks are in arrivals, with the cars collected from an off-site lot reached by shuttle bus. A car helps for the countryside, but central Florence has a limited traffic zone (ZTL) closed to non-resident cars.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Florence airport from the city center?
Florence Airport, Peretola, is about 4 km northwest of the historic center of Florence. A taxi takes about 15 minutes to the center, depending on traffic, and the T2 tram reaches the city center in about 20 minutes. That makes it far closer to Florence than Pisa airport, which is about an hour away.
Is Florence airport in Florence?
Yes. Florence Airport is in the Peretola district on the northwest edge of the city of Florence, close to the A1 and A11 motorways. It is also known as Amerigo Vespucci Airport. It should not be confused with Pisa International Airport, which many travelers to Florence also use.
How many terminals does Florence airport have?
Florence airport has one passenger terminal. The main building has check-in, security, arrivals and Gate 1, and it is connected to an older building that holds Gates 2 to 11 and a food court. None of the gates have jetbridges, so passengers walk or ride a bus between the terminal and the aircraft.
Which airlines fly to Florence airport?
Florence is served mainly by European airlines. Air France, KLM, British Airways, Lufthansa group carriers Air Dolomiti and Eurowings, Swiss, Austrian, Iberia, TAP Air Portugal and ITA Airways connect it with their hubs. Vueling and Volotea fly to cities in Spain, France, Germany and Italy. All flights use the single terminal.
How do I get a taxi at Florence airport?
Licensed white taxis wait at the official rank in front of the terminal as you leave arrivals. The ride to the historic center takes about 15 minutes. Taxis can enter the limited traffic zone in central Florence, so they can usually bring you close to your hotel. Avoid anyone offering rides inside the terminal.
Is there a tram from Florence airport to the city center?
Yes. Tram line T2 starts at the airport, with its stop on the left as you exit the terminal. Trams run about every 5 minutes and reach the city center, including the stop for Santa Maria Novella station, in about 20 minutes. Tickets are sold at machines at the stop, which accept coins and cards.
Is there a bus from Florence airport to Santa Maria Novella station?
Yes. Autolinee Toscane runs a bus between the airport and Santa Maria Novella, Florence's main railway station, about every 30 minutes. Most travelers now use the T2 tram, which is more frequent, but the bus is a useful alternative when the tram is crowded or out of service.
Can I use Uber at Florence airport?
Uber in Italy mainly works with licensed taxis and private hire drivers rather than private cars, so it is not the same service you may know elsewhere. Most arriving passengers use the official taxi rank, the T2 tram or a pre-booked driver. Check the app on arrival to see what is available at the time.
What do I need to enter Italy at Florence airport?
Travelers on flights from outside the Schengen area go through passport control on arrival. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation. Passengers from other Schengen countries arrive without passport checks.
Should I fly into Florence or Pisa?
Florence airport is much closer to the city, about 15 minutes by taxi, but it has fewer routes. Pisa airport handled almost 6 million passengers in 2025 compared with about 3.8 million at Florence, and offers more low-cost flights. From Pisa, the PisaMover and a train, or a direct bus, take about an hour to Florence.
How do I get from Florence airport to Siena or Chianti?
Siena and the Chianti hills lie south of Florence and are easiest to reach by car, either a rental car or a pre-booked transfer. By public transport you can take the T2 tram to the city center and continue by bus or regional train from Florence. Allow extra time for connections when traveling with luggage.
What time zone and currency does Florence use?
Florence is on Central European Time, UTC+1, and moves to UTC+2 for daylight saving time from late March to late October. Italy uses the euro, and there is an ATM and currency exchange in the arrivals area. Summers in Florence are hot, and winters are mild but often damp.
