About Tenerife South Airport

Tenerife South Airport (TFS) is the main airport for holiday flights to Tenerife, the largest of Spain's Canary Islands. It stands in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona on the island's south coast, beside the TF-1 highway, and is run by Aena.

Most flights come from the UK, Ireland and continental Europe. Ryanair, which has a base here, Jet2.com, easyJet and TUI fly the most routes, joined by Condor, Eurowings, Norwegian, Transavia, Wizz Air, British Airways and Binter, and from late 2026 by Air Canada from Montréal and Toronto. The airport handled about 14 million passengers in 2025.

All flights use one passenger terminal, with arrivals, baggage claim and the bus and taxi stops on Floor 0 and the boarding area, shops and restaurants upstairs.

The resorts of the south are close: Los Cristianos is about 18 km (11 miles) west along the TF-1 and Costa Adeje about 20 km (12 miles), with Playa de las Américas between them, a drive of around 20 minutes. El Médano, Golf del Sur and Los Abrigos are nearer still, while Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital, is about 63 km (39 miles) to the northeast.

Arrival tips for Tenerife South Airport

Flights from Spain and other Schengen countries arrive without passport checks. If you come from outside the Schengen area, such as the UK or Ireland, you line up at passport control, where non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System. The Canary Islands are outside the EU customs and VAT area, so follow the customs channels after baggage claim.

Tenerife South has one terminal, and arrivals are on Floor 0. Follow the signs to the baggage claim hall for your flight: there are two halls with 14 carousels, and the screens show your belt. Airline handling desks for lost or damaged bags are in the reclaim halls.

Outside arrivals, also on Floor 0, you find the Titsa bus stops, the official taxi stand and the car rental desks. Pre-booked drivers meet passengers in the arrivals area. Take taxis only from the signed rank.

The Canary Islands are one hour behind mainland Spain, and Spain uses the euro.

Ground transportation

Buses are cheap and reach the main resorts; a taxi or pre-booked car is easier with luggage, late at night or for villas away from the bus routes.

Bus line 40 to Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje

Titsa's line 40 leaves from the stop on Floor 0, outside arrivals, and runs to Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje bus station. It stops at the main roads, not at each hotel, so allow for a walk with your bags.

Bus line 10 to Santa Cruz

Titsa's line 10 links the airport with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital, from the same arrivals stop. Night line 711 covers Santa Cruz, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje when the day lines stop.

Bus line 343 to Tenerife North Airport

Line 343 runs directly between Tenerife South and Tenerife North airports in about 50 minutes, useful for connections with inter-island and domestic flights.

Taxi from Tenerife South Airport

Official taxis wait at the signed rank on Floor 0 at arrivals and go door to door to the southern resorts and across the island. Aena advises against drivers who approach you away from the rank.

Private transfer

A pre-booked car meets you in the arrivals area, suited to families, groups, late arrivals and villas or rentals away from the bus routes.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Tenerife South Airport from Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas?

Los Cristianos is about 18 km (11 miles) west of Tenerife South Airport along the TF-1 highway, and Costa Adeje about 20 km (12 miles), with Playa de las Américas between them. The drive takes around 20 minutes in normal traffic. Titsa bus line 40 also runs from the airport to Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje bus station.

How far is Tenerife South Airport from Santa Cruz de Tenerife?

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital, is about 63 km (39 miles) northeast of Tenerife South Airport by the TF-1 highway. Titsa bus line 10 links the airport with Santa Cruz, night line 711 runs when the day buses stop, and taxis and pre-booked cars wait outside arrivals.

Is Tenerife South the same as Tenerife North airport?

No. Tenerife has two airports. Tenerife South (TFS), near Granadilla de Abona, handles most international and holiday flights and is closest to the southern resorts. Tenerife North (TFN), near La Laguna, handles many Spanish domestic and inter-island flights. Check the code on your ticket; bus line 343 links the two directly in about 50 minutes.

Is Tenerife South Airport the same as Reina Sofía Airport?

Yes. Tenerife South Airport, code TFS, has long been called Reina Sofía Airport, after Queen Sofía of Spain, who traveled on its inaugural flight in 1978. In Spanish it is the Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur, and you may see all of these names on tickets, signs and travel sites.

How many terminals does Tenerife South Airport have?

Tenerife South Airport has one passenger terminal for all flights. Arrivals, the two baggage claim halls with 14 carousels, the bus stops and the taxi stand are on Floor 0, and the boarding area with shops and restaurants is upstairs past security. There is no need to change terminals.

Which airlines fly to Tenerife South?

Ryanair, which has a base here, Jet2.com, easyJet and TUI fly the most routes, mainly to the UK, Ireland and continental Europe. Condor, Eurowings, Norwegian, Transavia, Wizz Air, British Airways, Aer Lingus, Binter and others add more, and Air Canada begins flights from Montréal and Toronto in late 2026.

Is there a bus from Tenerife South Airport?

Yes. Titsa buses leave from the stop on Floor 0 outside arrivals. Line 40 runs to Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, line 10 to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, line 343 directly to Tenerife North Airport, line 415 to El Fraile and San Isidro, and night line 711 links Santa Cruz, the airport, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje.

Where is the taxi stand at Tenerife South Airport?

The official taxi stand is on Floor 0 of the terminal, outside arrivals. Aena advises taking a taxi only from the signed rank and not from drivers who approach you elsewhere, and asking for a receipt if you may need to make a complaint. Taxis go door to door to the resorts and across the island.

What do I need to enter Spain at Tenerife South Airport?

The Canary Islands are part of Spain and the Schengen area. Flights from other Schengen countries arrive without passport checks, while arrivals from outside it, including the UK and Ireland, go through passport control, where non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES). Check the visa rules for your nationality before you fly.

Are there duty-free limits when flying to Tenerife?

Yes. The Canary Islands are in the Schengen area but outside the EU VAT and customs area, so duty-free allowances on tobacco, alcohol and other goods apply when you arrive and when you fly home, even on flights to mainland Spain. Arrivals with goods to declare, or cash over 10,000 euros, must use the customs channel.

Is there a lounge at Tenerife South Airport?

Yes. The Montaña Roja VIP Lounge is in the passenger-only zone on the second floor of departures and serves Schengen and non-Schengen flights. It opens at 7:00 every day and closes between 21:00 and midnight depending on the day. Entry can be bought through Aena's official channels, for a stay of up to three hours.

Is Tenerife South Airport open all night?

The terminal closes to the public from 23:00 to 4:00 and whenever no flights are scheduled, according to Aena. During those hours only staff and passengers shortly before their flight can enter, so plan an early departure around the reopening and avoid waiting inside the terminal overnight.

What time zone is Tenerife in?

Tenerife and the rest of the Canary Islands use Western European Time, UTC+0, moving to UTC+1 for summer time from late March to late October. That is one hour behind mainland Spain, including Madrid and Barcelona, so check connection times and pickup times against local Canary time.
